#### Steinhatchee Falls

Steinhatchee Falls rates as Florida’s broadest and most interesting waterfall. This limestone shelf along the Steinhatchee River served as a crossing point for wagons as settlers pushed their way south along the gulf Coast. The wagon ruts are still visible in the limestone on both sides of the river. Timucuan Indians, Spanish Explorers, Seminole Indians, and Civil War troops also passed through this area, crossing at the Falls. A riverside park has interpretive information, picnic tables, and a boat launch; a hiking trail starts just outside the gate. The River Haven Marina offers kayak rentals that include drop off at the Falls.

### Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail

One of the longest and wildest publicly-owned coastal wetlands in the United States, you will find an array of bird and marine life. Flocks of white pelicans often zoom past in winter and great egrets dot marsh expanses, white as snowflakes. Bald eagles and ospreys entertain with their aerial maneuvers, and in the often clear waters, one can spot crabs, fishes, sea turtles, manatees, cannonball jellyfish and small sharks and rays.

#### Hagen's Cove

About a 15-minute drive up the coast is some of the most gorgeous scenery you will find and home to some beautiful bird and wildlife watching. Called one of the “premier shorebird locations on Florida’s Gulf Coast” the Cove attracts sandpipers, whimbrel, reddish egrets, plovers, egrets, blue herons, and swallow-tailed kites. The Cove offers picnic pavilions, a lookout and some incredible march grasses shoreline! The recreation area provides panoramic views of the pine island’s, unique natural beaches, and shallow bays of the Gulf of Mexico. An observation tower offers great view of the surround areas and a boat ramp for small craft is on site. Taking in the Cove at sunset is an absolute must, especially during the winter months.

#### Road To Nowhere

One of the best spots in the area to watch the sunset, fish one of the many creeks, star gaze or photograph wild life is the “Road to Nowhere”. Enjoy an adventure of a 7 mile primitive drive straight into the Gulf of Mexico.
On this stretch of road there are four boat launches (sand ramps). All are in creeks with good access to the Gulf of Mexico for small motorized boats, airboats and paddle craft.
The dry season, November – March, is an ideal time to take this adventure.

Outdoor Adventures!

Recreation opportunities for the avid hunter, paddler and birder abound. The Big Bend Wildlife Management Area provides numerous areas for hunting opportunities and seasons for archery, muzzleloader and modern gun hunting.

#### Scenic Trails in Gulf Coast State Parks

Dallus Creek in the Tide Swamp Unit, 9 miles north of Steinhatchee, offers a short hiking trail, great birding and wildlife viewing, paddling, fishing and a scenic driving tour. Visit [www.floridaconservation.org](http://www.floridaconservation.org) for more information. The Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail also attracts visitors from across the country to its 105-mile trail. And the Great Florida Birding Trail offers more than 400 sites throughout Florida for birders and wildlife observers. Check out www.floridabirdingtrail.com for a complete list of area sites to visit.

#### Forest Capital Museum State Park

Located 18 miles north in the city of Perry, is the Forest Capital Museum State Park. Dubbed the “Tree Capital of the South” this combination park and museum shares the history of logging in the region and describes, incredibly, how the area’s longleaf pines contribute to the manufacturing of more than 5,000 products. From the museum you’ll enter a Cracker Village that, in 1863, was home, sweet home, for the Whiddon family. Their original cabin, barn, kettlehouse and smokehouse, created from hand-hewn logs, are here, giving visitors an idea of how they – and hundreds of other pioneer families – lived in the backwoods of frontier Florida.

#### Shired Island

Part of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, the Shired Island Boat Ramp & Trail provide access to the Gulf, shoreline fishing, and a short trail to a 7,000 year-old archaeology site. You’ll want to bring your camera. For anglers without vessels, the ample sea wall provides plenty of shore-fishing opportunities. There are no nearby stores or tackle shops, so come prepared. After enjoying the walk out to the point, you’ll see millions and millions of sun-bleached shells. Ancient cultures of fishing people discarded their meal debris (oysters, clams, scallops, fishbones, etc) where they ate. Millennia of this accumulation gave height to the island that was once merely a mudflat at the edge of the Gulf. Please, stay on the beach and leave the island interior to the wildlife. Enjoy a day of discovery at your National Wildlife Refuge.

#### Steinhatchee Pier
